Wheelchair Curling Classifier Seminar

International Classification panel made up of - Younghee Lee (China) , Marc Deperno (USA), Jooyoung Park ( Korea), Kate Caithness (WCF President), Andrew Burt (Scotland), Roman Suda and Eeva Roethlisberger (Switzerland)

Is there a change of a different type on the wind?

It seems it may be, in November of last year it seems a panel of experts came together in Korea for an International discussion on Wheelchair curling classification.

Will wheelchair curling finally get an official classification system?

The outcome of the seminar and workshop is unknown but I am sure time will tell if we suddenly see major changes to who can or cannot play. Stay tuned.

Jack Smart - New Team Canada Alternate

Change for Team Canada - Say good bye to Bruno and hello to Jack!

As Canada perpares for world championships in CHUNCHEON CITY, GANGWON PROVINCE , SOUTH KOREA.

Canada changes the line up, even if only a small change it does make a change. Jack Smart will be joining the established team from the Vancouver Paralympic Gold Medal team of skip Jim Armstrong, third Darryl Neighbour, second Ina Forrest, lead Sonja Gaudet and coach(s) Joe Rea, Wendy Morgan.

Although it maybe a surprise to some it may be a start to the development of a new team some where down the road post 2014. Jack steps in for Bruno a 2 year vet of the spot and Bruno we can only spectulate would move down the line. This would then have us wonder were 2010 National Champion skip Chris Sobkowicz fits into the mix.

Jack will bring a well rounded addition to the spot, basically being able to fill any postiion should it be needed. Long time third for Bruno and an accomplished skip himself; Jack has to be proud of the work it has taken to reach this international stage.

The question will remain for those which were involved in a seris of development camps, who may be next or will Jack settle in for the long term?

Only time and results will tell.

Updates including a full teams lists, and schedule for Gangwon will be posted by the end of the weekend.

Congratulations Jack and Good Luck!

8th Annual Pat "o" Reid Memorial Bonspiel - THIS WEEKEND

The 8th Annual Pat "o" Reid Memorial Bonspiel is set for this weekend.

For those of you who may not know who Pat Ried is all I can say is your have missed out on one of the greatest people I ever had the honour to know. Pat O Reid was the front person for wheelchair curling when it first came to Canada. She is and was the primary reason in this country (Canada) that wheelchair curling exists.

I had the honour to know Pat Ried, although even for a short time. Her impact on the sport in this country for both wheelchair and able-bodied is ever lasting. She is missed dearly.

The bonspiel is open to both abled-bodied and wheelchair users in an inclusive format. The hope is to have 5 competitive wheelchair teams at the event. Teams from Toronto (Rees), Bradford (Gregory), Ottawa (Cameron) and 2 Teams from Ilderton (Bell, Iderson) will be making the track to play. These games could be seen as the forefront to Provincials play downs schedule at the end of the month in Kemptville at the North Grenville Curling Club from Jan. 31 until Feb.4. The provincial play downs will have 1 additional team from the Ottawa area (Fraser). OCA is the sanctioning body.

Games this weekend will be at 10:30am and 2:30pm, on a points based win system.

O.C.C. Team Ranking System points will be gained by competitive wheelchair teams.

CCA Featured athlete of the week.....

They call him “Flex” – and for good reason!

St. John’s curler Felix Green, a native of Middle Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, has earned his nickname by being a versatile athlete on and off the ice.

Competing at the 1979 Canadian Games for the Physically Disabled in Vancouver, B.C., Green won a gold medal in the 100m Backstroke, a silver medal in Wheelchair Slalom, and a bronze in the 100m Freestyle.

This performance followed his 100m backstroke gold medal in the 1978 Games in his hometown of St. John’s.

Since then, he’s added wheelchair curling to his repertoire, representing Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship as second on his provincial team, along with skip Joanne MacDonald, third Darlene Jackman, lead Lanie Woodfine and coach Leslie Anne Walsh

Welcome....

Ok, so let me lay to rest any questions here. I wanted to continue some great work started by Eric Eales and his website www.wheelchaircurling.com.

I am trying to continue the information sharing which we the wheelchair curler needs. I do not profess at all that this blog is by any means going to stand up to a standard which Eric started by I just felt and for that matter read that allot of wheelchair curlers out there wanted this type of site to continue.

So with that I am asking for ALL of your help!!!!

I will post all information sent into to me at chris@chrisdaw.ca but please make no mistake I will not be doing continuous research so the success of this site will depend on everyone. I will make the best effort possible to find - then post information as I know it but will need your help.

So let's make the community we started continue.

As for comments; I will let ALL comments within reason be posted. No foul language and other common sense rules but I really don't care if you put your name to it or not. Freedom of speak and all that. If a comment post becomes questionable then parts of the comment will be posted and other parts blanked out.

Let's continue to build on the works that Eric started. I know his passion for the sport still stands.....
