Wheelchair Curlers make a difference as difference makers!

Twenty-five years ago Rick Hansen had a dream - to make the world more accessible and inclusive and to find a cure for spinal cord injury (SCI). Inspired by a deep-seated belief that anything is possible, Rick's dream took shape in the form of the Man In Motion World Tour (MIMWT). For 26 months he and his team wheeled over 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries, raising awareness of the potential of people with disabilities. The completion of this epic Tour was a testament to willpower, physical prowess and the ability to lead a seemingly impossible campaign. It was the beginning of a lifelong and selfless journey to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

From the beginning of the 25th anniversary wheelchair curlers from across the country have been participating in this monumental celebration, starting with Joanne MacDonald – Skip of Team Newfoundland & Labrador to the latest difference makers Cindy Hoffstrom, 3 time Northern Ontario Champion and Mark Wherrett now member of Chris Sobkowicz’s Team out of Manitoba.

Joanne MacDonald

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the MIMWT. Moving from one Man In Motion to Many In Motion, it is a global invitation to join Rick in his journey towards a cure and a more inclusive society as he inspires a new generation to be difference makers -to dream, to take action, to continue to change the world.
Wendy Morgan (National Coach)

The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay will re-trace the Canadian segment of the original Man In Motion World Tour. Starting in Newfoundland and travelling westward to British Columbia, the nine-month relay will cover 12,000 kilometres, and visit over 600 communities from coast to coast - in every province and territory. With over 7,000 participants, this exciting and inspiring journey will celebrate and showcase Canadians who are the pride of their communities, recognizing everyday heroes, including youth, who are making a difference in the lives of others and who motivate us all to better our country and our world.
Chris Daw

The Rick Hansen Difference Maker Awards recognize individuals who have made a significant impact in the area of accessibility, researchers who have advanced discoveries related to SCI research, community leaders and youth who have put "service above self" to make an extraordinary difference in the lives of others.
Mark Wherrett & Cindy Hoffstrom  (center)

If you’re a difference maker during this relay, please send us a picture and we will be glad to honour your participation by posting your picture and story.

 Are you a difference maker?

As we get closer and closer to the World Championships in Korea we now have access to the schedule.

You can download the schedule (PDF Reader required) or review it here:Schedule

As we know; Canada is the defending champions with what could be argued to be the strongest wheelchair curling team ever to exist. With Canada’s experience and training they are going to be the team to beat. Top that with the fact they have only made 1 change (that being only an alternate spot); to a lineup which dominated the sport for the last 3 years.
The real challenges could come from anywhere this year. As the sport evolves we have seen a major change in the balance of competitive teams which fall underneath Canada’s talent pool.

The top ranked teams which could challenge for top spot this year are of course GB(Scotland), they have always been in the running since the sport started and with some changes in both players and the adoption of Canadian insert Tony Zummack at coach watch for them to take a run at the gold.
Next in line has to be Korea and China. As host Korea has something to prove with an almost stolen win at the 2010 Paralympic Games. Watch for them to fight to the top but rumors have it that a couple of notable players from Korea may not be on the team this year so who knows. China of course shocked the world with their style and performance at the last Worlds.

Sweden is another team which could make it to top spot, with the return of their long time skip moving away from coach and back to player this alone could make the difference.
The other teams playing in this year’s event all could do it as well for this is the sport of curling and anything can happen on a given day but most represent what can be thought of as the next evolution of the sport when talking about wheelchair curling. We are seeing a changing of the guard for most teams. Long time players moving on and new ones jumping in to take those open spots and the USA team is the team with the greatest change with only 2 returning players.

In the next few weeks I will profile each team as the line up for Worlds is locked in. Stay tuned it will be fun!

Teams qualified for the 2012 event and 2011 World Wheelchair Curling Championship Final Standings:

    1. Canada 11-0 Gold (qualified for WWhCC 2012)

This event is the first World Wheelchair Curling Championship to be held in the Pacific-Asia region and we hope it will be a catalyst for many more international curling events in this part of the world. In many ways it is recognition of the growing achievements of the Korean Wheelchair curlers on the international stage, having continued to impress following their silver medal at the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver.
Their success is testament to the amount of enthusiasm and dedication that the Korean Wheelchair Curling Association has put into the sport. We are confident that interest will continue to grow throughout the Pacific-Asia region as the nation prepares to host the 2018 Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang.
We thank our Korean colleagues and partners for the tremendous support they have provided to ensure that this International Curling Event is successful and look forward to their hospitality throughout the event.
We would like to wish all athletes good luck and good curling at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships 2012

Series #1 - Article #1 - Body type training– are we slaves to our ‘body type’ genes?

As I move forward with this blog and try to create a sense of information sharing; I thought I would pass along so of the information I have gained throughout my 30+ years in Paralympic sports.

When I started training years ago I was working with a coach named Tudor Bompa out of York University. Great coach, great guy! One of the things he first trained me on was understanding my "somantotype" was I endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph. Also, once we discovered my Somantotype was it going to be possible to change my type in order to meet the need of the sports I was participating in.

Throughout my career and my changing of sport, I contribute my success of being able to change sports and be successful in those sports to understand my samantotype and what samantotypee is best suited to which sport. I have created a series of articles I would like to share with you guys and get your feedback on. If successful or if there is continued interest I will post more of the series then seek out more information from the top trainers/coaches so we can all benefit in our knowledge and/or performances.

So he we go...were I started 30 some years ago. Series #1 Understanding somantotype and how it can affect the way we train, diet and perform.

Body type training– are we slaves to our ‘body type’ genes?

The human body comes in a huge array of different shapes and sizes, but should your natural body type dictate the sport you choose or the way you train?

In a particular sport or event within a sport, the participants will often share a similar body shape. For example, male sprinters tend to be relatively tall and be proportionately muscled, whilst female gymnasts tend to be relatively slight with very low body fat and shot-putters relatively round with more body fat and large muscles. These sports’ body shapes quite closely reflect the three derivative ‘somatotypes’ (body type classifications). The sprinter fits the typical mesomorph body type, the gymnast the ectomorph, and the shot-putter the endomorph. In this article, we’ll consider the relationship between body types, sports performance and training response. In wheelchair curling most body types fall in the “Endomorph” and “Mesomorph” classes

Somantotype, body classification and ‘typical’ training response

    Figure 1

As indicated there are three main body types or somatotypes: endomorphs, mesomorphs and ectomorphs. This basic classification derives from the work of the psychologist William Sheldon in the mid 20th century. In everyday terms these types can be described as ‘fat’, ‘athletic’ and ‘thin’ (see figure 1). Sheldon believed that each somatotype had distinct physiological (and psychological) traits.

Although his work is perhaps overstated it provides a useful starting point for the analysis of male and female body types. This is because it’s possible to identify the ways that these types will typically respond physiologically to training and the way they are represented across various sports.

Most athletes (and non-athletes) are actually an amalgamation of the three main body types and there is a further level of somatotype classification that describes a body type in terms of ‘parts’ of the three. This is known as ‘dominant somatotype’.Sheldon identified ‘seven parts’, 1-7 for each somatotype, with 1 being the minimum and 7 the maximum number of parts attributable to that somatotype. For example, 2-6-3 indicates low endomorphy, high mesomorphy and low ectomorphy (note variations to this system exist which use decimal points).

    to be continued....

    Poll was reset!

    Quick Update
Sorry folks but this weeks poll was accidently reset. The Poll asks - Where do you think Camada will finish at the World Championship being held in Korea.

Before the poll was reset it stood at:

    Gold (1st) -    6 votes
    Silver (2nd) - 0 votes
    Bronze (3rd) - 1 vote
Out of Medlas - 1 vote

I do apologize for the reset it was totally my fault and invite you all to please vote again. You will also note that a single voter can now pick more than 1 option. This has been requested so I am going to try it out and hope the votes don't get to screwed up.

Again, thanks for the patience and understanding as I get the bugs worked out!

    Wheelchair curling starts in Greenock

Waterfront Leisure Complex was the venue on Sunday for the Royal Club’s ‘Introduction to Wheelchair Curling Module’. Sheila Swan gave participants an insight to wheelchair curling and covered the various wheelchair curling delivery techniques that are used.

After the theoretical element, the 8 attendees had the opportunity to try the techniques from a chair themselves. It is intended to now build links with Disability Groups in Inverclyde in order to establish wheelchair curling as a regular programme.

Try Curling events were also held over the weekend at Kinross and Waterfront rinks. Kinross had a phenomenal response with 69 new curlers taking to the ice for the first time, led by an enthusiastic group of coaches. Waterfront’s session was less successful in terms of participant numbers with 8 attending however each and every one enjoyed their session and are hoping to get back on the ice soon.

    Looking for Links

As we move closer to the end of the first week of Wheelchair Curling Blog 2, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your support and feedback.

I would really like to thank you all for the patience you are showing as the page including the stories goes though a few small changes. Regarding the stories, thank for the help on getting the information  correct. As we all know; it is impossible for me to get out to all of these events and rely on you the reader, to send in the information facts. I do my best to scan the net for information but it really is you who control this site and make the news.

So, if you can keep helping I will keep posting. I am looking for anything that you may think the readers and the wheelchair curling community may want to know. A feel good story, how you helped change minds in your community or club about the sport and of course those event updates.

Much like Eric, I am doing this free of charge and without gain; really I am!

I love the sport of curling and don't want the information to die but do not profess by any means I am a professional journalist. I have some experience but am more of the programmer type than anything else. I follow this sport with great passion and although retired it does not mean my passion has died!

I have added a important links (with permission) on the side and if you want your club or organization listed just drop me an email. I am hoping in the next few weeks to be able to advertise events (not sponsors) so if you have a play down, bonspiel or just a funspiel you want posted let me know.

You are the voice of Wheelchair curling though out the World so let your voice be heard!

Team Canada Coach comments on Jack Smart Selection

    Wendy Morgan show on right

As Team Canada coach Wendy Morgan told Eric Eales from wheelchaircurlign.com

    "
Jack Smart embodies the skill sets and team attributes that have put him on our national program radar screen for some time.

Jack travelled with Team Canada to Norway and Scotland in October and had a very positive experience.

As part of our strategic plan leading to 2014 we decided to provide the world championship experience to a deserving athlete that has yet to wear the Maple Leaf and give them the opportunity learn what is required to perform in that environment."

(Though Bruno Yizek and Chris Sobkowicz were available) "
at this time Jack was the better choice."

Comments provided by Eric Eales fo wheelchaircurling.com

A curling we will go.... (corrected)

It is going to be a busy 6 weeks or so folks…

As we build up to the end of the 2011-2012 curling season the next few weeks will play out a number of important events in the world of wheelchair curling.
We have provincial’s championships playing out from one coast to the other with only a few teams having already been decided for Nationals in Thunder bay this year.

The Big Kahuna will be played out in Korea this year with Canada, China, Korea (host), Norway, Russia, Scotland, Usa, Sweden, Italy and new comers Slovakia via for the world title.

Over the next few weeks I will try and preview Worlds and follow the rest to the best of my ability. I do ask you, the readers, that if you have updates to please send those updates/results in because the world does want to know.
Heading back to provincial for a second; we are certain of 2 teams heading to Nationals as of right now. Team MacDonald will be heading back for there 4th nationals and new comers out of Nova Scotia – Team Brown will be going out for there first nationals after what could be said is a major upset of Team Rutt. Team Rutt as we know had a change this year after Mike Fitzgerald long time skip picked up roots and headed off to New Brunswick. We will see if Team Brown has what it takes to play at the top level in Canada.

As for the rest of the country; well though your money down and place your bets.

B.C. – You have Team Cormack taking on Team Canada, sorry Team Neighbor. Daryl may have stacked his deck a little bit in having team mate Sonja Gaudet playing with him and we will see the return of Gerry Austgarden coming out of retirement to play second.

Alberta (Correction)– should have a great play down with Team Yizek still being the favored team even with the loss of Bridget Wilson who has decided to step back. However; as reported on wheelchairculing.com earlier this year -  they may face a regional challenge by Lethbridge, and Edmonton (last year's national's host team) will certainly compete for the provincial title.
Saskatchewan -  Not much news out of this province so at this time we have to assume Team of Del Huber, Gil Dash, Marie Wright, Darwin Bender and Terry Hart Would be the natural returners

Manitoba – Well to no surprise we should see defending champions Team Sobkowicz return; even more so with former Northern Ontario third Mark Wherrett joining the team.

Northern Ontario – So this one is a tossup, You have 3 time northern champions, Team Ficek playing off against Team Levesque  and Team Sudbury who lost their skip this year to medical school. This should be a hot one to watch.
Ontario – Well we saw the preview of how this one could play out this past weekend at the Pat “O” Reid Bonspiel in Toronto, seeing Team Ilderton take it. However; I am sure Team Cameron along with experienced Teams Gregory, Rees and even Team Fraser from Ottawa will have something to say. Also; you may see and an additional Team out of Ilderton in the form of original Team Canada third Don Bell leading a team.

Quebec – We should without allot of question see Team Lesard. This team has been turning heads all year and Nationals should see if they can pour it on and capture their first National title.
Nova Scotia – We know who is coming and it is new comers Team Brown after there upset of Team Rutt. They could be the wild card.

Newfoundland & Labrador – Team MacDonald will be making their return for the 4th time. This could be a team to watch out for. They have come a long way in a short time, have experience behind them and the only women skip. So watch out!

New Brunswick N.W.T., Yukon & P.E.I. – With the move of Mike Fitzgerald we would have thought to have seen something out of at least New Brunswick this year but no word. As for P.E.I, Yukon, and N.W.T. word has it there are in the development of teams and we may see them at Nationals in the next couple of years
So there you have it folks, the short version of the preview to Nationals, the calendar for the next few months is below – lots of news, so let’s see those updates.
