Community group gets funds for Wheelchair curling transportation

Orginally Published on Friday 4 May 2012

BERWICK Borough Housing has awarded £28,000 to 12 local community groups following a competitive application process.

Twenty applications were made for a share of the development fund offered by the housing association, a subsidiary of Four Housing Group.

Among the groups receiving vital additional funding is the Bear Ahead Group which offers much needed support for sufferers of brain trauma injury. It has been awarded £3,467.

Three Fields Residents associations has been awarded £5,500 for play park fencing, while Prior Park Residents Association has been granted £5,232 for its jubilee party and the formation of its junior residents association.

St Mary’s Play Group in Belford has secured just under £3,000 for garden improvements and play equipment and Border Wheelchair Curling Club gets £1,920 towards transport costs.
Milfield Reading Room receives £3,224 for new windows, Holy Island of Lindisfarne Community Development Trust gets £1,800 for community archive equipment and Berwick Riders Association gets £564 for radio handsets.

St Aidans Hall Trust in Berwick has been awarded almost £2,000 for a new projector and Lucker and Bamburgh Willow Weavers get £500 for tools. Learning Choices were given £1,320 for two new laptops to help teach free IT courses.

Dawn Keightley, Four Housing Group’s director of operations, said: “All 20 of the applications were of a very high standard and I know the panel found it very difficult to reach a final decision. The groups the panel chose make a real difference to the lives of those in the selected community and we will be watching eagerly to see how the money has made a difference.”

“The development fund is available on a yearly basis and is open to all community groups in the Berwick borough,” she added. “The criteria for applications is that the group must focus on the local environment, neighbourhoods and communities, old, young or vulnerable people, anti-social behaviour or health and lifestyle improvement, and we will support projects that will primarily benefit our Berwick Borough Housing residents.”
