Laughie Rutt comes out of retirement to play third at Nova Scotia Provinicals

The Nova Scotia provincials are set for January 4th - 6th at the Halifax Curling Club. Two teams will playoff in a best of five series. Defending champion Richard Brown will skip a team with Paige Fougere as lead and Steve Parfitt playing second. The third and playing coach is Laughie Rutt. George Horning who has relocated to Nova Scotia is the Alternate.

They will face a team skipped by Trendal Hubley - Bollivar. Debbie Earle will play lead and Devan Forbes will play third. Terry Cousinneau is their alternate after leaving team Brown in the summer. This is the same team that played in Utica in the US Open.

 Halifax curling club is the oldest continuosly operated curling club in Canada and was founded in 1824.

Kate Caithness honoured by Queen

Kate Caithness, President of the World Curling Federation, has been recognised in Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year Honours List.

Caithness has been bestowed the honour of an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to curling and international disability sport.

Speaking about the award, Caithness said: “I am absolutely thrilled and delighted. It is a great honour and is wonderful recognition for the sport of curling and wheelchair curling and all those involved in playing and developing the sport.”

The Queen’s Honours List is a means of rewarding an individual's exceptional achievement or exceptional service to the United Kingdom and British Overseas Territories. The awards are made twice-yearly, at New Year and for the Queen’s official birthday in June.

The Order of the British Empire awards were established by King George V in 1917 to recognise the service and achievement of people from all parts of society.

BC Playdowns set to go - Cormack vs. Austgarden

2 former gold medal teammates will be 2 of 3  teams playing it out this year for the right to play for BC at the National Championships in Ottawa in March!

Top player for Bc and Gold Medalist Gary Cormack (skip) will be joined by Frank LeBounty (3rd), Vince Miele (2nd) and Allison Duddy (lead). This team has won the show before and is a team which has been just that a "Team for a number of years now.

They will face off against another Gold medlist in Gerry Austgarden (skip), joined by 2 x Gold medalist Sonja Guadet (3rd), Mark Peeren (2nd), Pat Ryan (lead) and Brandon Perger (5th)

Austgarden was recently cut from the top 8 Natioanl team pool players but has Sonja won once again made the team in what will be her 6 apperance at worlds in Sochi.

They both will face Rich Green (Skip), Bob McDonald (3rd), Ellis Tull (2nd), Corinne Jenson (Lead) and Sam Siu (5th)

The 3 teams will meet over 3 days, Jan. 25 to Jan. 27 at the Nanaimo Curling Club.
