October 23 to 26, 2013

From October 23 to 26, 2013 the RCD will be hosting its 7th annual wheelchair curling bonspiel tournament – 2013 Canadian Open at the Richmond Curling Club.

Wheelchair curling tournaments have been staged at the Paralympics since the Winter Paralympic Games in 2006 in Turin. The 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia will be held from March 7 to 16, 2014.  So far, Canada has been the most successful team in the Paralympics, winning twice of the gold medals. In fact, Canada won its third World Wheelchair Curling Championship title in February 2013 at the Ice Cube Curling Center, venue for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

As Sochi Paralympics are just round the corner, 2013 Canada Open sees the participation of 7 teams full of world class caliber athletes. They are Alberta, BC, BOSQ, Canada, Edmonton Rocks, RCD and Scotland.

Another GOLD for Scotland - Kinross International Oct 15-17, 2013

by Tony Zummack (Team GB Coach)

This past week Team Great Britain was in action against 10 other teams and 5 of those are representing their countries at the Paralympic Games this coming March at the 6th Kinross International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel.

After section play it was decided by 1 point that GBR would finish in first place while Sweden secured second place in the Black Section. In the Red Section Norway finished top of the table with Italy finishing in second position.

The gold medal game was very tight and required an extra end to decide. After a good draw around a corner guard by GBR and a failed take out by NOR, GBR won gold medals for the second time this season.

Congratulations to Aileen Neilson, Gregor Ewan, Robert McPherson and Tom Killin as they continue preparations with the Canadian Open this coming week. In the bronze medal match SWE controlled the entire game against ITA to secure their bronze medals
Finals; GBR - Gold NOR - Silver SWE - Bronze
