Russia have been crowned the winners of the 2015 World Wheelchair Curling Championship ©WCF/Alina PavlyuchikRussia claimed their second World Wheelchair Curling Championship title after winning the gold medal game against China at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja.

Having thrashed Slovakia 12-1 in the sole semi-final earlier in the day, Russia went into the final in confident mood and were no doubt keen to avenge China's victory against them in yesterday's play-offs.

After stealing a single point in the first end, Russia moved into a 4-0 lead in the second when China skip HaiTao Wang hit an opposition guard and promoted it into the house.

China fought back, taking one point from the third end and stealing another in the fourth, but Russia pulled away again in the fifth when skip Andrey Smirnov attempted a draw into the house and fortunately hit his own guard, promoting it into a scoring position and earning his team three points.

Despite taking one point from the next end and stealing a single point in the seventh, China conceded in the eighth to give Russia a 7-4 victory and their first win in the competition since 2012, when it was held in Chuncheon, South Korea.

"I feel perfect - so, so happy," said Smirnov, who played alongside Marat Romanov as third, Svetlana Pakhomova as second, and Alexander Shevchenko as lead in the gold medal game.

"The second Championship win is certainly more rewarding because this time around I understood what it took to win a World Championship.

"The first time it was a little bit of surprise but this time it was a big challenge for us.

"I think it will be a good chance to further develop wheelchair curling in Russia.

"We have a lot of new facilities opening and new people who are starting to play so we believe this will be good for the sport in our homeland."

China, who had the youngest average team at this year's Championship, recorded their best-ever finish at the Championship in taking the silver medal.

"It's a pity we didn't win gold but this is the first time our wheelchair team has made it to the final so we have to be proud of our achievements," said Wang.

"We are very young with a long future ahead of us and I know we'll get better and better, year by year."

Meanwhile in the bronze medal game, hosts Finland won 8-5 against Slovakia to ensure their best-ever finish at the Championship as well.

With Finland 3-1 behind in the fourth, skip Markku Karjalainen had the opportunity to score six points with a draw into the house, and although his shot was too heavy, the five points scored put them 6-3 in front.

The two teams exchanged single points in the next three ends before Finland secured their win with a hit for one point in the eighth.

"We all feel incredible," said Karjalainen.

"It feels like winning [the gold].

"Today I think that it was the Finnish attitude and spirit that helped us get the win.

"The fans throughout the week have been fantastic and today they were our ninth stone."

Finland received further good news as Mina Mojtahedi was awarded the World Wheelchair Curling Championship Sportsmanship Award following nominations from all competitors.

The Award is given to the athlete who best exemplifies the traditional values of skill, honesty, fair play, sportsmanship and friendship.

Following the conclusion of the event, the latest Wheelchair World Rankings were published, which sees Canada and Russia retain the top two spots and China leapfrog Scotland/Great Britain into third position.

Scotland needed a win on Wednesday morning to keep their play-off hopes alive and they achieved this as they edged their USA opponents 4-2.

Scotland skip Aileen Neilson said: “It went right down to nearly the last stone so we had to dig deep. We knew we had to put a win on the board and we’re so happy that we have!”

Scotland got off to a fantastic start defeating Germany 12-2 in their first game and then Sweden 6-2 in the second. They then lost to China 6-4; Norway 6-2; Russia 6-3; Canada 6-4; Slovakia 6-5 before beating the USA on Wednesday before going down 8-4 to Finland in the afternoon session.

Former Corrie Ronnie roars on wheelchair curlers

Barriers came crashing down at Border Ice Rink on Saturday when some unlikely candidates got together with the collective aim of highlighting disability sport.

Scottish folk legend and artist Ronnie Browne, The Southern Reporter, Ataxia UK East of Scotland branch and the Borders Wheelchair Curling Club joined up for a day of fun, socialising and sportsmanship, and the hope of promoting the ‘Roaring Game’ to all and sundry.
The disabled curlers may have had the edge on the ice, but in the case of friendships formed and important links made, the occasion was declared an undoubtedly successful stalemate.
The initial idea for the get-together came from Browne, patron of the Ataxia branch, who just happened to overhear two of the group’s members, John Hunter from Selkirk and John Reid from Hawick, talking about going curling.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” said Browne. “Here were these two guys, in wheelchairs, dealing with severely-debilitating symptoms, talking about going off curling.”

Browne discovered that both Johns have been members of the Borders Wheelchair CC for several years and immediately set about organising a trip for others in his branch, including himself and carers, to come down to Kelso and try it for themselves.

“The benefits are obvious in terms of both physical and emotional wellbeing,” he added.
Celebrating his 66th birthday on the day, Hunter told us: “Curling is a hugely important part of my life. I used to wheelchair race, but am unable to do that anymore, but I can still curl and enjoy both the sport and the friendship within the group.”

The visitors were welcomed to the ice rink by Borders Wheelchair Curling Club chairman Ewan Girvan, who was, in turn, thanked by Ataxia UK East of Scotland branch chairman Pete Dalby. Following the curling, the branch treated the company to lunch.
Ataxia, meaning lack of order, affects more than 10, 000 people in the UK and causes sufferers problems with movement, balance and speech. There is currently no cure.
For more information on Ataxia, email info@ataxia-east-scotland.org.uk, and for wheelchair curling, contact Valerie Robertson on 01896 82369001896 823690.

Russia win World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2015

For immediate release: 13 February 2015

Lohja, Finland – Russia are the 2015 World Wheelchair Curling champions after defeating China in the gold medal game at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2015 held at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland.

The result means that China take the silver medals while hosts Finland defeated Slovakia to win the bronze medals.

In the gold medal game, Russia raced to a 4-0 lead after two ends, stealing a single point in the first end before China skip HaiTao Wang hit a Russian guard and promoted it into the house to give Russia a steal of three points in the second end.

China battled back, taking one point from the third end and stealing a single point in the fourth end.

Russia extended their lead in the fifth end as, with his last stone, Russia skip Andrey Smirnov attempted a draw into the house. Luckily for him he hit his own guard, which promoted into a scoring position to give Russia a score of three points.

China took one point from the next end, then stole a single point in the seventh end before Russia closed out their win as China conceded in the eighth end, with the final score 7-4.

This is the second World Wheelchair Curling Championship win for Russia and this team after they won in Chuncheon, Korea in 2012.

In this year’s gold medal game they were skipped by Andrey Smirnov, with Marat Romanov as third, Svetlana Pakhomova second and Alexander Shevchenko as lead. They were supported by alternate Oxana Slesarenko (who played in some games throughout the Championship) and coach Anton Batugin.

After winning the game, Russia skip Andrey Smirnov said: “I feel perfect – so, so happy! The second Championship win is certainly more rewarding because this time around I understood what it took to win a World Championship. The first time it was a little bit of surprise but this time it was a big challenge for us.”

Speaking about the significance of their win, he said: “I think it will be a good chance to further develop wheelchair curling in Russia. We have a lot of new facilities opening and new people who are starting to play so we believe this will be good for the sport in our homeland.”

For China, who take silver, this is their highest ever finish at a World Wheelchair Curling Championship, a remarkable achievement for two reasons: wheelchair curling only began in China in 2007 and they have the youngest average team age in this year’s Championship.

After picking up the silver medals, China skip HaiTao Wang said: “It’s a pity we didn’t win gold but this is the first time our wheelchair team has made it to the final so we have to be proud of our achievements. We are very young with a long future ahead of us and I know we’ll get better and better, year by year.”

In the bronze medal game, Slovakia were leading 3-1 going into the fourth end. There, their fourth player Branislav Jakubec attempted to promote one of his stones which instead raised a Finnish stone into a scoring position.

Finland skip Markku Karjalainen was left with a draw into the house which would have scored six points, but his shot was too heavy. None they less, Finland still took five points to gain a 6-3 lead by the fourth end break.

The teams exchanged single points in the next three ends before Finland secured their win and the bronze medals with a hit for one point to make the final score 8-5 in the eighth end.

Finland made history in this Championship for more than one reason. Not only was this their highest ever ranking at a World Wheelchair Curling Championship, it also marks the first time that Finland have been represented by teams at the World Wheelchair, World Women’s and World Men’s Curling Championship in the same season.

After their win, Finland skip Markku Karjalainen said: “We all feel Incredible! It feels like winning (the gold). Today I think that it was the Finnish attitude and spirit that helped us get the win. The fans throughout the week have been fantastic and today they were our ninth stone.”

Speaking about their experience playing in this year’s Championship he said: “It was very special to play here in our homeland - it gave us strength. With these medals, hopefully more people in Finland will start playing wheelchair curling and more dedicated facilities will be built.”

Finland received further good news as second Mina Mojtahedi was awarded the World Wheelchair Curling Championship Sportsmanship Award following nominations from all competitors. This award is given to the athlete who best exemplifies the traditional values of skill, honesty, fair play, sportsmanship and friendship.

Earlier in the day, Russia comfortably beat Slovakia 12-1 in the sole semi-final.

Russia have qualified for the gold medal game after defeating Slovakia in the semi-final at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2015 being played at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland.

It started well for Russia as skip Andrey Smirnov was able to draw into the house to score three points in the first end after Slovakia fourth Branislav Jakubec missed a takeout with his final stone.
Russia went 4-0 ahead in the next end as Jakubec wrecked on a guard with his final stone, giving up a steal of one point.

Slovakia got on the board in the third end, scoring one point, but Russia extended their lead as Slovakia’s Jakubec was too heavy with his final draw, allowing Russia skip Andrey Smirnov to draw into the house to score three points to lead 7-1 by the fourth end break.

Russia then stole another two points in the fifth end as Jakubec’s attempted double take-out with his last stone didn’t come off as his stone rolled out of the scoring position.

When Russia took another three points in the sixth end, Slovakia decided to concede the game in the seventh end with the final score 12-1.

This win for Russia means that they progress to the gold medal game while Slovakia head to the bronze medal game to face Finland.
