Vince Miele carrys Rick Hansen Medal

It has been some time since we saw a wheelchair curler carry the Hansen medal but yesterday saw top National Curler Vince Miele have that honour!

Twenty-five years ago Rick Hansen had a dream - to make the world more accessible and inclusive and to find a cure for spinal cord injury (SCI). Inspired by a deep-seated belief that anything is possible, Rick's dream took shape in the form of the Man In Motion World Tour (MIMWT). For 26 months he and his team wheeled over 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries, raising awareness of the potential of people with disabilities. The completion of this epic Tour was a testament to willpower, physical prowess and the ability to lead a seemingly impossible campaign. It was the beginning of a lifelong and selfless journey to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Through the Foundation that bears his name, more than $250 million has been raised to accelerate progress towards a cure for SCI, and a more accessible and inclusive world.

Perth County Accessibility Plan Moves Forward

Progress is being made as Perth County works to remove barriers for people with disabilities. That’s according to Accessibility Coordinator Mary Anne Melanson who says many improvements have already been made, more are in the works and a five-year plan is being developed.

Melanson made the comments after Paralympic gold medalist and Rick Hansen Foundation Ambassador Chris Daw made a presentation to County Council Thursday. The visit was an early kick-off to National Accessibility Awareness Week which will be recognized from May 27th to June 2nd.

Some low key activities will be held that week but Melanson suggests the County, St. Marys and Stratford are planning a big event for 2013.

Paralympic Gold Medalist and Rick Hanson Foundation Ambassador Chris Daw made a presentation to Perth County Council in Stratford Thursday morning. He stuck around to chat with members of the local Accessibility Advisory Committee. It was part of an early local kick-off to National Accessibility Awareness Week which will be held from May 27th through June 2.
