SWCA Friendship Trophy

SWCA Friendship Trophy

7 Ice rinks fielded 2 Pairs each to contest the Inter Ice Rink Friendship Trophy 2012 at Kinross.
In a depleted North section Stirling squeaked through against Kinross by 1 shot to make the final and met Lockerbie. In the last round robin game in the morning, Lockerbie had won both games against the much fancied South Lanarkshire pairs to secure their slot with Daniel Cowan (Lockerbie) delivering some excellent stones.

In the 5 end final it was nip and tuck as Rosemary Lenton and Mary Bell (Lockerbie) eased past Brian Smith and Freddie Cumming (Stirling) with a score of 8-1. On the adjacent sheet Neil Hogg and Willie Hamilton (Stirling) were 4-1 up going into the last end against Daniel Cowan and Keith Thorn(Lockerbie). Helped by some great draws by ex bowler Willie, Stirling lay 3 with Daniel’s last stone to come.

However , Daniel’s touch deserted him and he wrecked on a guard to give Stirling a steal of 3 and a score of 8-1 to Stirling.. Umpire Gifford Rickard had no way of separating the teams through points, shots, or ends and it was agreed that for the first time the trophy would be shared between Lockerbie and Stirling to the delight of all.

It was a most enjoyable final and the whole competition was played in the best of spirits with many new faces on ice enjoying their first competitive curling experience. A great high tea was served in the Green Hotel on Saturday and gave everyone a chance to chat .

Judy Mackenzie (SWCA Chairman) gave a vote of thanks to all concerned and in the absence of Ann McGarva, who had originally donated the Friendship Trophy, was delighted to present the handsome crystal plate to new winners both Lockerbie and Stirling.
