Stranraer Ice Rink wheelchair curling

The Stranraer Wheelchair Curlers in blue, took to the ice for their first ever curling match this Wednesday at the stranraer Ice Rink, their opponents were lockerbie.

THERE was a unique event in the forty plus year history of Stranraer Ice Rink last week when two teams of wheelchair curlers from the rink played a challenges game against two team of “wheelies” from Lockerbie Ice Rink.

The Stranraer curlers - Douglas Dewar, Phil Heron, Graham Keenan, Ann Baynes, Joe McGurk, Stewart Maxwell and Joan Cummings won one game 7-4 and first the other one by the narrowest of margins going down 7-8.

Skip of the winning Stranraer team Douglas Dewar told the Galloway Gazette: “We had a really good game and enjoyed playing in a competitive match. We had been looking forward to this for weeks and practising hard. Most of us are now looking forward to joining local clubs next season and getting more time on the ice.”
