Coquitlam to host 2014 BC Wheelchair Curling Championship

Coquitlam Curling Centre has been named as the host site for the 2014 BC Wheelchair Curling Championship.

The event will take place from January 24-26, 2014 and will feature BC’s best wheelchair curlers.
The centre is housed in Coquitlam’s state-of-the-art Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex, which was completed in 2010.

The winner of the 2014 BC Wheelchair Curling Championship will travel to Montreal, Quebec, in April 2014 for the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.

Last year’s BC champions, Team Cormack, skipped by Richmond curler Gary Cormack, were silver medalists at the national level.

BC has had a strong presence on the international wheelchair curling stage for a number of years. Most recently, BC curlers Sonja Gaudet and Ina Forrest formed part of Team Canada’s curling team that took gold at the 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championship in Sochi, Russia.

Coquitlam Curling Centre is hosting the wheelchair event after successfully hosting the 2013 Tim Hortons BC Junior Curling Championships.

Barry Ayers, Coquitlam Curling Association Vice President, said: “The event is a good fit for us and our facility because we want to keep hosting events and our facility is brand-spanking new.
“We’re looking forward to it. After we finished hosting the Juniors, we said ‘what’s next? Let’s do another event!’”

According to sources, there may not be a playdown this year as there may only be one team seeking to represent the Province of B.C. and that team will possibly be skipped by Darryl Neighbour as Gary Cormack has taken a year off in order to care for his mother who has just been diagnosed with "dementia". Too early to say who will make up the balance of the team.
