Zehn Nationen kämpfen gerade bei den Paralympics um die Medaillen im Rollstuhlcurling. Nicht mit dabei ist Deutschland, das die Qualifikation für Sotschi verpasst hat. Für Oliver Geißinger keine Überraschung. „Wir haben in Deutschland zu wenig Rollstuhlcurler, um auf höchstem Niveau mitspielen zu können“, sagt der 46-Jährige vom Curlingclub Konstanz. Seit einem Schulaustausch in Kanada ist der Biologe Feuer und Flamme für Curling und unterstützt auch – obwohl selbst nicht behindert – die Rollstuhlfahrer, die im Konstanzer Club aktiv sind. „Leider haben wir im Moment nur zwei Aktive“, bedauert Geißinger, dass die Initiative des Vereinspräsidenten Oliver Trevisiol, Behindertensport anzubieten, nicht auf mehr Resonanz gestoßen ist. Dabei ist Rollstuhlcurling seiner Meinung nach die für Behinderte am besten geeignete Wintersportart. Beim Regelwerk gibt es keine großen Unterschiede zum gewöhnlichen Curling, abgesehen davon, dass das Wischen fehlt. Wenn ein Spieler einen Stein beschleunigt und losgelassen hat, kann er dessen Weite nicht mehr weiter beeinflussen. Die optimale Platzierung des Steins ist dadurch weitaus schwieriger. Um vom Rollstuhl aus den Stein auf dem Eis erreichen zu können, nutzen die Spieler einen teleskopartigen Stick.
Wer das Rollstuhlcurling einmal ausprobieren möchte, hat dazu in der Bodensee-Arena Konstanz-Kreuzlingen noch zwei Mal Gelegenheit, bevor die Curler Saisonpause bis Oktober machen. Am Dienstag, 11. März, findet das Training ab 21.20 Uhr auf der offenen Eisfläche links neben der Arena statt. Am Freitag, 14. März, wird an gleicher Stelle ab 19.20 Uhr trainiert.
