CORECTION -

Sorry folks we had our information wrong on this one. Gary Cormack and his rink does advance to the final but who they play is yet to be determined. Our apologies to the Green rink!

Based on the 2 wins by Cormack he advances directly to the final however this morning the Ausgradern and Green rink shall play to determine who gets the chance to face him.

Stay tuned for updates!

In the other provinical championship happening this weekend We saw Gary Cormack and his crew beat Gerry Austgarden yesterday in the opening game of the BC playdowns. Well, he keep that winning way today taking on Rich Green.

Things get messy up front, and Cormack stole 5 in the 5th; Cormack keeps it simply throughout the last 3 ends. Making it  hard for Green to generate an offense winning 12-6

Ken Gregory and Team Bradford win OCA Playdowns

Today's final is between two teams who know each other quite well and who have been here before. Chris Rees had a three-peat in 2006, 2007 and 2008 sandwiched between wins by Ken Gregory in 2005 and 2009. Rees changed his lead and second in 2011 and they came away as champions so he's hoping the same line-up will be successful again.

Gregory, with the hammer, opened with a deuce, then stole a single and followed that with another steal of a trey to jump ahead 6-0. Rees took a single to enter the break down by 5. Determined to get back into the game, Rees came out of the break with a single steal and looked to put pressure on Gregory. With at least three ends left anything can happen.

In the 6th end Gregory took back the single Rees had stolen in the 5th and the struggle intensified

This battle did not include Jim Armstrong, skip of the national team; Armstrong for the second time since playing in a provinical playdowns failed to make the finals when he came short with hammer on 2 opportunies to close the door on Gregory in the semi-finals giving Gregory the 8-7.

The Rees team has never not been in an Ontario final since playdowns started say them once again a favourite after beating the heavy favourite of the whole tournament Jim Armstrong and his rink out of the Galt Curling club.

A few key shots being missed were the difference in the game seeing Ken Gregory and his team return to the Nationals for 3 times since appearances in 2005 and 2009.

BC Playdowns under way - Cormack over Austgarden in draw 1

Authored by Vincent Miele

In game 1 Cormack defeated  Ausgarden 10 - 7 . Gerry was allowed by the CCA to play with 3 when his lead and spare did not attend. After 7 ends the game was tied

7-7. In the 8th, Sonja made a double raise takeout of an opposing stone to sit as shot rock. FRANK TRIED AN ANGLE TAKEOUT OF A STONE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE BUT WENT JUST PAST. Then Gerry threw a guard preventing access to the shot rock.

With Cormacks first stone he removed the guard opening up access to the house. With Gerry's last stone he attempted to replace the guard but the stone ovcurled leaving the opportunity for Cormack to have access for an angle raise takeout to the shot stone.

A timeout was taken to discuss the options and the ice required. After a short discussion it was decided that that was the shot to be made. The shot was made to score 3 and win the game.

Log jam broken

Authored by Trevor Kerr

Apparently the log jam at the top of the leader board was broken by point differential because in head to head competition in the round-robin Chris Rees beat Jim Armstrong, Armstrong beat Ken Gregory and Gregory beat Rees.  The total point differential (points scored minus points allowed) had Rees with +33, Armstrong with +26 and Gregory with +16.  In point differential between only the three leaders it was Rees with +6, Armstrong with +3 and Gregory with -9.  Either way you calculate it Gregory had to take on Armstrong with the winner challenging Rees for the Provincial Championship.

In this semi-final game Armstrong opened with a single and stole a pair in the 2nd to go up 3-1.  Each team then took singles to go into the break with Armstrong leading 4-1.  The Gregory team came out refreshed in the first end after the break and posted a 4 spot to go ahead by one.  Armstrong took one in 6 to tie and stole a pair in 7 to go up by 2.  The seesaw battle continued with Gregory taking a clutch pair in 8 to tie the game 7-7 and send it into an extra end.  Seven was a lucky number for Ken Gregory because in the extra end he stole the one point he needed to win thus making the final 8-7.  He now has to defeat Rees again in tomorrow's final in order to become champion and represent Ontario in the Nationals.  Can he do it?

Curling club ready for provincials

Curling club ready for provincials

By Josh Aldrich, Daily NewsJanuary 24, 2013

Ellis Tully and Corinne Jensen are hoping to book another trip to the wheelchair curling national championship this weekend as the Nanaimo Curling Club hosts the 2013 Thyssen Krupp Elevators Ltd. B.C. Wheelchair Curling Championships.

They are part of a newly formed rink under skip Rich Green out of Richmond. Tully plays second and Jensen lead while Bob MacDonald of Vancouver is third and Samantha Siu from Richmond is their alternate. There will be two other rinks made up of players from across the province vying for the championship, the fifth year it has been held.

The two other rinks also contain members from last year's provincial championship team. Gerry Austgarden of Kelowna is skipping a rink that also includes Sonja Gaudet of Vancouver at third, Mark Peeren of Kelowna at second, Pat Ryan of Kelowna as lead and Brandon Perger as alternate.
The other foursome is skipped by Gary Cormack of Vancouver, with third Grank LaBounty from Prince George, second Vince Miele of Richmond and lead Allison Duddy of Quesnell.

Tull is just in his second year of competitive wheelchair curling and he is motivated to get back to nationals. Playing in their favour is the fact none of the teams have curled together much at all this year.

"We're hoping it's going to be pretty much an even playing field," he said. "We are hoping the home ice advantage will help and a lot of the local members and spectators will come out and hopefully that will put us over the edge."

The bonspiel gets underway on Friday with opening ceremonies at 2 p.m. and the first draw at 4 p.m. On Saturday, draws will be at 9: 30 a.m. and 2 p.m. with the semi-final going at 9: 30 a.m. on Sunday with the final at 2 p.m. Admission to the weekend is free.

The curling club has spent the past year officially preparing for the provincial championship but has been building towards this weekend since serving as the accreditation centre for the 2002 B.C. Summer Games and realized how far below standard the facility was. They have spent the past several years upgrading the club with ramps, elevators and handicap bathrooms to make it more accessible to everyone.

"Wheelchair curling was starting to come on the horizon at the time," said club manager Denise Wood. "It was in combination of just being a community facility that was available to people."

The strongest survived

As expected, the three strongest teams won their games this morning and tie-breakers will take place this afternoon. Two games ended early with handshakes after 6; but one game went the distance.

Without the hammer Gregory stole a triple and, although Fraser scored a pair in the second end, Gregory took multiple points in 3, 4 and 5 to open a 10-2 lead.  Another stolen single in 6 was enough to convince Fraser to call it quits.

Also without the hammer Eddy stole one in the first; but it was all he would get because Rees proceeded to score in each of the remaining ends.  Rees scored a pair in 2 and 6 to bookend the string and had one in 3, a triple in 4 and one in 5 to complete it.

The third game was different in several ways.  The team with the hammer scored in the first, the game went the distance and the score was the closest of the three in this draw.  Team Armstrong scored a pair to open the game and stole one and two respectively in the next two ends to go ahead 5-0 and take a lead they would not relinquish.  Morris took a pair in 4 and stole a pair in 7 but it wasn't enough and Armstrong won 8-5
